Earlier in 2024, Netflix released a mini-series titled Griselda that caught people’s attention. The show caused quite a stir, blending fiction and reality and leaving us with a terrific tale of Griselda Blanco, her drug operations, and her family. However, our interest today falls on one of her boys, Osvaldo “Ozzy” Trujillo, and how his mother’s business led to his untimely death.
Early Childhood
Osvaldo Trujillo was born in 1975 in Medellin del Ariari, Meta, Colombia. He’s the third of three boys born to Griselda Blanco and her first husband, Carlos Trujillo. His father died years later, and his mother married another man, with whom she had a child named Michael Corleone. Her favorite movie was The Godfather! As you can imagine, Osvaldo didn’t have a normal childhood.

His mother, Griselda, ran away from her home at a very young age and, within a few years, had already met her first husband and started dealing drugs. So, by the time she and Carlos had their first boy, her drug operations were well underway. This led to a life of chaos and danger for Osvaldo from an early age. Surrounded by his mother’s growing empire in the drug trade, from Colombia to Queens and Miami, he was exposed to a world far from ordinary.

Sadly, Griselda’s influence ensured that her children were raised in an environment where crime and violence were part of the daily routine.
Life After Joining the Family Business
By the time Osvaldo was old enough to understand, his mother had already become infamous, earning multiple nicknames such as the “Cocaine Queen of Miami,” “La Madrina,” “The Black Widow,” and “La Dame de la Mafia.”With such a powerful and feared mother, Osvaldo’s path seemed almost predetermined, leading him into the heart of the family business at a shockingly young age. Soon enough, he and his brothers took part in the family business, managing several operations under their mother’s name.

Apparently, the brothers controlled the cocaine trade, facilitating its transportation from South America to the markets in the USA. As Osvaldo grew in the business, still navigating adolescence, he had immense authority and a steady cash stream. Of course, this meant he had no one to rein him in when his whims took over. Soon enough, he developed a taste for the lavish, enjoying fancy clothes, gadgets, and cars such as Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, and Porsche. Naturally, none of this lasted long.
Osvaldo Trujillo’s Tragic End
The life of drug dealers is full of notoriety and isn’t one of peace. There are rival gangs, law enforcement, and internal betrayals to worry about. Osvaldo was shot in October 1992 while standing outside a nightclub in Medellin with his wife. He passed away from his gun wounds in front of the club, while his wife, Elena, survived hers.

Osvaldo wasn’t the only one assassinated from his family members. His mother and two older brothers died the same way. The only person who survived the family so far was Griselda’s youngest son, Michael Corleone, who shunned the family’s business and chose a different path.
Quick Recap
In the end, Osvaldo’s life was cut short in a violent confrontation. The power and fortune that had once shielded him from consequences couldn’t save him from the inevitable. His tragic end, as well as that of his family, was a stark reminder that in the world of drug dealing, no amount of money or influence could protect you from the fallout.
